THE ANNUAL Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts

The Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts

Three new annual awards totaling $10,000 for members of Palm Beach County?s diverse performing arts community have been established by The Frank Foundation to recognize and reward individual artists and dedicated instructors who enrich the quality of the performing arts in Palm Beach County.

Dr. Randolph A. Frank, Sr. (1924 ? 2007) of Palm Beach was the son of John G. Frank, Professor of Languages at Princeton University.  Dr. Frank graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1948 with a degree in medicine, later serving his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, before co-founding The Washington Psychiatric Institution.

Dr. Frank?s wife of 46 years, the late Judith Lanier Waldrop, was an editor at Vogue Magazine in New York.  Her father, Frank C. Waldrop, was the owner and editor of the Washington Times Herald (later to become the Washington Post).  Dr. Frank was a loyal advocate of the performing arts and particularly impressed with the evolution of Palm Beach County?s performing arts scene. Therefore, The Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts has been established by its trustee, Ellis J. Parker.

Steven Caras, Director of Development for Palm Beach Dramaworks, was invited by Mr. Parker both to chair the annual prize project and to inaugurate a local committee.  Caras immediately invited four highly esteemed individuals in the community to join him as co-committee members: Jo Ann Engelhardt, Managing Director of Bessemer Trust; Dreyfoos School of the Arts Musical Theatre Director Craig D. Ames; Tracy C. Butler, Director of Education at the Kravis Center; and Roy Bartolomei, M.A., Harvard University.

Caras remarks, ?Dr. Frank was a passionate man, dedicated to establishing a legacy of ongoing support for the performing arts and arts education here in Palm Beach County.   It was a privilege to know him and it will be an equal privilege to serve with my distinguished fellow committee members, to realize his mission in the community that he grew to love.?

The Mission of the Randolph A. Frank Prize for the Performing Arts is to recognize and reward individual performing artists and dedicated instructors who enrich the quality of the performing arts in Palm Beach County.  All established and emerging individuals who regularly perform or engage in performing arts education in Palm Beach County are eligible for consideration for the Prize, which will be awarded annually.
