Summer Internship Program

The Norton Museum of Art offers a seven-week, paid internship to six high school students, two undergraduate students and one graduate student. Students become involved in a range of professional activities, including teaching in the Museum galleries, assisting staff with research and a variety of other duties related to the operation of a non-profit cultural institution. In addition, interns work with Museum education and curatorial staff to develop their own exhibition, which remains on view after the Internship concludes.

Weekly Intern Enhancement Days provide opportunities for interns to speak with Norton Museum professionals. Field Trips on these afternoons introduce interns to professionals outside the Norton working in fields such as art conservation, performing arts education and arts management. Since its inception in 1995, the Internship Program at the Norton Museum of Art has provided high school, college and graduate students from around the country with marketable, real-world job skills.

High School Internship

Six high school students are selected each year to participate in the High School Internship Program. Interns spend approximately 50% of their week leading summer camp groups through special exhibitions and hands-on art activities. Every intern is trained by staff and docents to assist in leading these tours. The interns spend the other 50% of their time in an administrative rotation working on projects for museum departments. Administrative projects can be brief and involve light clerical work or extensive requiring independent research and writing.

Length: 7 weeks
Positions: 6
Required Commitment: 32 hours per week
Eligibility: High school interns must be rising juniors, seniors or about to enter their first year of college. Selection criteria include merit, interests, enthusiasm and communication skills. While an interest in art is preferred, students do not have to have an extensive art background. Other interests may include administration, marketing & public relations, special events and education.

Undergraduate and Graduate Internship

Length: 7 weeks
Positions: 3
Required Commitment: 32 hours per week
Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students may apply. Students must be currently enrolled. While an interest in art is preferred, students do not have to have an extensive art background. Other interests may include art administration, non-profit management, museum studies, marketing & public relations, development, special events and education.

Internship Options

Intern Supervisor
The Intern Supervisor is selected because of their interest in art administration, and/or education and/or management. They are primarily responsible for supervising the high school interns, which includes scheduling, troubleshooting, planning projects, and acting as a liaison with museum staff. The intern supervisor follows the same work schedule as the high school interns ? an administrative rotation and work with group tours and summer camp art projects.

Administrative Intern
The two Administrative Interns are students selected because of their interest in a particular area within one or more administrative departments in the Museum. Internship projects are based on Museum needs and are assigned to interns with the appropriate skills and interests. Public Relations, Curatorial and Education are just three departments who have developed long-term projects for Administrative Interns in previous years. The Administrative Interns also fill in for the Intern Supervisor when they are out of the building or have a day off.
